German Shepherd
German Shepherds aka Alsatian is an intelligent and capable working dog. Their loyalty and courage are unmatched. German Shepherds are fierce but friendly, and have a calm confidence that may seem kind of aloof. When in need, however, a GSD is instantly ready to protect, play a game or perform a task in some cases as a guard dog, police dog, herder or seeing eye dog. With a strong work ethic and an eager intelligence, they crave challenges. Lots of activity and exercise will make them happy, but tracking, obedience and agility games or any task-oriented activity will make them even happier. A bored German Shepherd Dog may resort to chewing furniture and clothes, digging up soil and other mischief. A typical GSD’s body is slightly longer than it's height. They are usually sturdy but lean with slightly convex forehead, long muzzle, pointed ears and almond-shaped eyes.

Basic Care
German Shepherd is an easy dog to care for if you keep up with the brushing of their double coats. German Shepherds are not high-maintenance dogs, but they definitely benefit from regular care and grooming. While their double coats don’t need clipping or trimming, they can develop mats and skin problems if you don’t brush them regularly to remove dead hair and debris. They are moderate to high shedders. The best time to start grooming your pet is when they are puppies.

Health Information
The German Shepherd is susceptible to some serious health conditions like elbow dysplasia and canine hip dysplasia, as well as minor problems like cardiomyopathy, hemangiosarcoma, panosteitis, degenerative myelopathy, malignant neoplasms, pannus, hot spots, skin allergies, gastric torsion, cataract, and perianal fistulas. This breed is also prone to a fatal fungal infection due to the Aspergillus mold. Because of these susceptibilities German Shepherds, like most other dogs, need to be seen by a veterinarian for routine checkups.
